Learning Theories
in Digital Context

LDTE 5000:  Theoretical Foundations in LDT

The learning objectives of this course were...

  • Discuss implications of learning theories for different instructional settings

  • Discern different learning theories in common and emerging digital learning contexts

  • Describe contemporary learning along a continuum of characteristics

  • Discuss the implications of learner characteristics for instruction in contemporary and future digital learning context

  • Recognize and articulate how personal philosophies and preferences for learning influence instructional practice.

For the final project of the Theoretical Foundations in Learning, Design, and Technology course the expectation was to utilize the acquired knowledge and understandings from the course to answer the following prompt:

How will you infuse elements of the theoretical foundations of learning in digital contexts into your

   upcoming educational practice?

I chose my response form as a graphical representation, vision board, and a museum card for elaboration.

What resonated with me the most from this course was Professor Mitchel Resnick’s 4 P’s (Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play) from his TED talk, Kindergarten For Our Whole Lives. Keeping this at the heart of design and instruction will motivate and inspire learners. This will keep with Hattie and Donoghue’s “will and thrill.” The theoretical foundations of learning that will complement this will be through constructionism, cognitivism, and connectivism.  This can be accomplished through inquiry and project-based learning. Learners will collaborate to construct their knowledge through research and learning experiences.  This may be accomplished through the digital context with multimodal media, social media, LMS (learning management system), discussion boards, and more. Students will be expected to take ownership of their learning by setting goals and reflecting on their understanding through a digital media they prefer (podcast, blog, or video). I believe it is important for students to be producers of technology and not just consumers.  I realize that some instruction and learning should be presented in a more traditional format (behavioral theory) for learning basic foundational concepts. However, this should be kept to a minimum in the digital context. My digital vision board reflects these theories to help me stay focused on these goals to enhance my digital instructional design and instruction.
